How to Resurface Concrete Driveways With Aggregate

Aggregates are crushed rocks or pebbles mixed with cement and often resurfaced onto driveways to add a decorative touch. The aggregates vary in color and size and can be partially exposed from the cement to exude the eclectic qualities of the stones. Resurfacing a concrete driveway with aggregates is a large job and requires at least two people to complete. The choice of size and style of the aggregates will be integral in laying out a suitable foundation that matches the landscape of the house. Since it is a driveway, avoid laying overly large or rigid aggregates to keep the surface smooth.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash off dirt or grease stains with a pressure washer.

    • 2

MIx concrete resurfacer in a plastic bucket.

    • 3

Fill cracks or holes with concrete resurfacer and pack in with a trowel. Smooth out the surface. Let the concrete sit for 24 hours.

    • 4

Dampen the surface with the pressure washer.

    • 5

Apply primer onto the driveway with a push broom.

    • 6

Mix concrete with aggregate in a concrete mixer. The style and size of the aggregate varies from flat to round, small to large, and aggregate is available in separate bags that can be mixed with concrete. Aggregate can also come pre-mixed with concrete as well.

    • 7

Spread the mixed aggregate concrete onto the driveway with a push broom. Pack it into into the concrete with a concrete tamper evenly and smooth out with a Fresno trowel.

    • 8

Spray hardener onto the driveway. Dry the concrete until it is firm enough to walk on and hard to the touch.

    • 9

Wash off the surface of the concrete with the pressure washer and a stiff-bristle broom to expose the stone aggregates. One person will use the broom to loosen the surface concrete while another person washes it off with the pressure washer. Do not wash off too much concrete as it may loosen the aggregates from their position. Let it dry overnight.

    • 10

Pressure-wash the surface to remove any debris that may have settled. Let it dry.

    • 11

Spray on a seal coat over the driveway.
