Asphalt Vs. Cement Driveways

Choosing a driveway can have a big impact on the exterior design of a home. There are many materials to choose from, including the traditional asphalt and cement options.
  1. Cost

    • Asphalt starts as low as $1 per square foot and goes up to as high as $5. Cement is typically more expensive, ranging from $3 to $10.

    Durability

    • While cement can last longer than asphalt, cement is vulnerable when exposed to particularly hot weather or salt, which is used on snow in cold areas.

    Maintenance

    • Asphalt needs to be resealed every three to five years, and cement is much cleaner and easier to take care of.

    Risks

    • An asphalt driveway should not be sealed within the first six to nine months of installation. If this happens, the driveway will remain forever soft.

    Considerations

    • In cold areas, it is vital to have a layer of gravel underneath a cement driveway. Otherwise, there is an increased chance of cracking during freezing temperatures.
