Instructions

    • 1

Use your tape measure to determine the dimensions of your patio, walkway or driveway.

    • 2

Mark the measured area using red spray paint, so that the edges are easily identifiable.

    • 3

Use your shovel to dig up any grass, landscaping or debris in the spot you are about to pave. Dig down about seven inches, to allow room for base layers. Make the bottom as flat as possible.

    • 4

Once the space is clear, pour gravel over the surface you have just cleared and rake it even. Use the level to make sure the gravel is even.

    • 5

Pour sand on top of the gravel, and use the 2-by-4 board to spread it evenly across the surface. Use your level to make sure the entire surface is even. If it's uneven, add more sand and spread it. Sand should be approximately one inch thick; some will sift down through the gravel so keep that in mind when buying sand.

    • 6

Start laying your pavers. Lay them in any design you choose, and continue until the entire area is covered.

    • 7

Pour sand on top of the newly laid pavers and use a broom to work the sand into the cracks between pavers. Once the sand has been spread evenly throughout, use the hose to wash any excess sand or debris off of the surface.
