DIY Sealcoating

Sealcoating is a process that is key to making your asphalt driveway last as long as possible. The sealcoating protects the asphalt from damage during wet and harsh weather. You can easily treat your driveway with a sealer and should do so every other year for the best protection. Ideally you should seal a driveway immediately after it is laid to prevent any chance of damage. You should perform sealcoating only when the weather is warm and there won't be any rain for a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove large pieces of asphalt from any cracks on the driveway. You can use a screwdriver to pry the loose pieces out. Cover any cracks in the asphalt with crack filler and smooth the filler flat with a putty knife so the cracks are level with the rest of the driveway. Let the filler set according to the directions.

Clean the asphalt with a degreaser and a stiff broom. You need to remove as much dirt from the asphalt as possible.

    • 3

Wash down the driveway with a garden hose to remove the degreaser, and let it dry for an hour.

    • 4

Mix the sealer thoroughly when you open it. Use a long stirrer and make sure you get all the compound from the bottom of the container.

    • 5

Pour a small amount of sealer onto the driveway at the end furthest from the road. Pour only enough to cover a few feet of asphalt at a time.

    • 6

Spread the sealer over the corner of the driveway you are starting in with a paint roller. Use a roller with a long handle so you don't have to get too close to the sealer.

Continue to pour out sealer and spread it until the driveway is covered. You want to end up with an even layer of sealer covering the asphalt. Let the sealer cure for at least one full day before using the driveway.
