Measure the length and width of your car. Add 4 feet to the width and length of your car for the measurements of your shelter. This will give you extra room to exit and enter the car without hitting or running into the pipes. It will also provide additional protection for your car, as rain and snow often flow sideways.
Assemble the ground poles using your measurements. The poles should make a rectangle and should provide ample room for your car. You should be able to easily stick these poles into your dirt lawn.
Cut holes in each of the corners of your tarp. Make sure these holes are at least 9 inches from the edge of the tarp, to avoid the chance of ripping the edge. Your tarp should be long and wide enough to completely cover the top of your shelter, as well as at least half of the sides. A good guideline is to make sure the tarp is double the width of your car, and several feet longer than your car.
Tie several feet of rope to each of the holes in the tarp. Use a firm knot.
Drape the tarp over the poles.
Use the metal stakes to pin the ropes to the ground.
