How do I Clean Asphalt Equipment?

Asphalt is made of a blend of tar and rocks and tends to stick to the inside of paver trucks and asphalt equipment. You have a few options of products called "release agents" to clean your asphalt equipment. Using the proper tools to successfully remove the asphalt can be accomplished when you use diligence every time you use your asphalt equipment. Asphalt equipment, primarily paver trucks, is used to lay down hot asphalt. All of the equipment's components should be cleaned after each use.

Things You'll Need

  • Tank with sprayer to hold the release agent
  • Soy-based or citrus-based asphalt release agent

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the conveyors, hopper and screed on the paver with the release agent before you begin paving; you can then use the paving equipment to spread the asphalt.

    • 2

After use, spray the release agent on the inside of the equipment, specifically the hopper and all corners where the asphalt has a tendency to build up, including the augers, rollers, corners of the screed and extensions.

    • 3

Let the release agent settle for at least 20 minutes. The release agent will effectively separate asphalt from the equipment.

    • 4

Use a flat shovel to remove all loose asphalt from the paving equipment.
