Different Kinds of Driveway Gravel

Pea Gravel

• Pea gravel is an inexpensive type of gravel. It comes in a variety of colors and textures. It is an attractive smaller stone that comes in a mixture of many sizes and finishes. More costly pea gravel is more rounded and not as sharp, more consistent in size, and has a better, richer color. Since pea gravel is small in size, it is better used in smaller driveways.

Lava Rock

• Lava rock is a porous rock that is reddish in color. The rock usually comes in a round or chunky shape. Due to the porous nature of the rock, this type of material will drain easily. Also due to the light weight of the rock, it is fairly inexpensive and will work for smaller or lengthier driveways.

Self-Binding

• This is the most common form of driveway material because of its inexpensiveness and ease of use. Ideal for longer areas, this type of gravel is made from a variety of different sized pieces that pack and lock together after repeatedly being exposed to the pressure of vehicles. This results in a more concrete-like driveway. However, unlike concrete, you do not have to worry about surface cracking or drainage problems.
