How to Lay Blacktop

Blacktop, or asphalt concrete, is a popular road covering for areas such as driveways. It gives a clean, attractive finish and is cheaper than concrete to supply and lay. Laying blacktop is not a simple process, but can be done with teamwork and good preparation. Finding a good paving contractor to deliver the asphalt itself is key, but you'll also have to be flexible with your schedule if rain gets in the way of your work.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray paint
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Use spray paint to mark off the area where you plan to lay the blacktop. Obtain the square footage of your area by multiplying the length by the width, if you haven't done so already.

    • 2

Excavate the area to a depth of 5 inches. Make sure the bottom is level by using a spirit level in random places.

    • 3

      Gather estimates for blacktop tar.

    • 4

Prepare the base for your tar by spreading a 4-inch layer of gravel in the excavated area. Wet the gravel (but do not soak it) with water to help it compact. Check the gravel using your spirit level.

    • 5

Arrange delivery of the hot asphalt through a local paving contractor. The workers will need to carry this out in warm weather to ensure that the blacktop is fluid enough to spread and level, so book them in for around midday.

    • 6

Spread the blacktop evenly over your area using rakes designed to level concrete. Spread the concrete once, then do so again to ensure the entire area is level.

    • 7

Let the area harden for 24 to 48 hours before driving or walking on it.
