Commercial Concrete Driveway Specifications

Base Depth

• A commercial concrete driveway base should be 6 inches thick, made up of an aggregate base material and fully compacted. This means the excavation for the driveway needs to be the depth of the concrete plus 6 inches more, to accommodate the base.

Reinforcements

• A commercial driveway should utilize a wire mesh reinforcement layer above the base layer, at least 1 inch from the bottom of the slab. The mesh keeps cracks from expanding if they occur. Commercial applications may require the use of rebar instead of wire mesh.

Concrete Depth

• Commercial driveways should be at least 6 inches deep using one course concrete. Depending on the jurisdiction, 8 inches of concrete may be required. Check with local building code and zoning officers.

Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

• While fiber-reinforced concrete is available, it is not standard, and results are mixed on how well it prevents cracking. Regulations generally require the same depth of pour regardless of which type of concrete is used, so standard concrete may be a better choice.
