How to Use Behr Concrete Stains

Whether you are installing a new concrete patio, driveway or walkway or updating an existing concrete surface, concrete stain makes a dramatic statement. Concrete stain can be applied in a solid color or used to create custom patterns and designs on the surface. Concrete no longer has to be a boring, muted grey surface but can have as much personality as the surrounding gardens and buildings. Concrete staining is not the easiest process but is one that the average homeowner can complete with a little patience, hard work and maybe a helper or two.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear protective clothing, safety glasses and gloves. Sweep the area to be stained and scrap away any debris or chipping paint.

    • 2

Apply a concrete cleaner/ etcher product to the entire surface to be stained with a watering can. Wait 10 to 20 minutes and scrub the surface with a stiff brush. Concentrate on mold, mildew and stained areas. Rinse thoroughly with water while continuing to scrub. Finish with a pressure washer if available. The concrete should feel like residue-free sandpaper when complete. Immediately clean all supplies with fresh water.

    • 3

Spread a concrete bonding primer using a paint brush, roller, foam applicator or sprayer. Allow to dry at least eight hours before continuing with the topcoat. The bonding primer can remain on the surface up to 30 days without a topcoat. If the topcoat is not applied within 30 days, the primer must be reapplied.

    • 4

Paint or rub the stain over the primer using a paint brush, roller or foam applicator. Recoat the area with stain after 24-hours. The stain dries enough for foot traffic in 24 hours but is not completely dry for two weeks. Avoid driving on and replacing furniture on the concrete until it is completely dry.
