How to Make a Doorstop Seal for French Doors

French doors are often used as exterior doors leading to a patio or deck. When exterior doors are installed, it is important to seal the doors properly in order to prevent drafts from occurring. One place to apply weatherstripping is on the doorstop, which is the part of the frame that stops the door in the frame when it is closed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the doorstop.

    • 2

Stand outside and close the door. Measure the gap between the doorstop and the front edge of the door every few inches. The weatherstripping must be thick enough to fit the largest gap between the doorstop and the door.

    • 3

Cut a groove into the joint between the door frame and doorstop with a grooving tool, working from the top of the door frame to the bottom of the door frame.

    • 4

Install the weatherstripping into the groove, beginning at the bottom of the door and working toward the top. Push the weatherstripping into the groove, but don't stretch it. Cut the excess length of weatherstripping at the top and bottom of the door frame.
