How to Build a Door Out of Foam Board

When you are installing new doors, there may be a time when the door opening is exposed while you are painting or staining the new doors. Instead of leaving the doorway open to the elements, cover it using a temporary door constructed out of foam board. You can make a foam board door quickly using materials that can be purchased inexpensively from any home improvement store. This allows you to keep the interior of the building protected.

  • Pencil
  • Jig saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the exterior inset of the door you want to cover using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Measure and mark the exact measurements of the door inset onto a sheet of 3-inch thick foam board using a pencil.

    • 3

Cut out the rectangle from the foam board using a jig saw, then sand the edges slightly using fine-grit sandpaper to remove any roughness from the cutting.

    • 4

Attach three plastic hinges along one long side of the foam door using 1-inch long nails, spacing the hinges out evenly.

    • 5

Insert a 1-inch thick, 3-inch long wooden dowel 1-inch deep into the front of the foam door by twisting it in, placing the dowel on the side opposite from the hinges. This will act as a handle on the foam door.

    • 6

Place the foam door against the door way, then tack the hinges in place using 1-inch long nails.
