How To Hang a Louvered Door

Louvered doors, or shutters, feature thin, horizontal slats that enable air and sunlight to filter through. Such a door adds architectural detail to a space and a touch of old-world charm. These doors come in many forms, including single, bifold and cabinet doors. Installing a louvered bifold door is a straightforward process you can easily complete with assistance from a friend or family member. Prime or stain the door beforehand and make sure it is completely dry at the time of installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the louvered door panels on a flat surface with their upper and lower edges in line. Install the top hinges 7 inches from the top of the louvered door and affix them in place with the screws provided with the assembly. Repeat the process to install the middle hinge between the panels. Also secure the lower hinge in place, 11 inches from the bottom of the louvered door panel. Repeat the process to secure the hinges on the second bifold louvered door.

    • 2

Secure the pivot plates, the pins that fit into the track and floor bracket, to the upper and lower edges of the side door jamb. Secure the locking mechanism to the top of the door onto which you are installing the knob, or the leading door. Plates, arms and installation hardware are available with the bifold door assembly. Read the owner’s manual for the exact placements of the plates and locking arms.

Measure the width along the inner edge of the door frame and cut a length of track to size, using a hacksaw. Slide the small stops into the center of the track. Position the wheeled track hangers around the stops and the pivot socket along the outer edge. This hanging hardware helps the door to slide open and shut.

Set the track with the hanging hardware onto the door header and secure it in place using screws provided with the assembly. Position the track 1 inch from the edge of the door header.

    • 5

Secure the louvered door’s floor bracket flush against the door jamb using screws provided with the assembly. Refer to the manufacturer’s measurements, also provided, for the exact placement.

    • 6

Set the door into the track, ensuring that the upper pivot plate’s pin and roller attaches into the pivot hole and track. Align the lower end of the louvered door so its bottom pivot pin catches the bracket in the floor.

Install the doorknob on each leading door. Measure and mark on the door 36 inches up from the floor. Find the middle of the rail at that height and mark the spot. Drill 3/16-inch holes over the mark, depending on the amount needed for the desired knob. Set the knob over the spot and drive in screws to attach it to the leading door.
