How to Hang an Accordion Door

An accordion door gets its name from the design similarities it shares with the air bellows of an accordion. Accordion doors open from one side to the other and fold into an area of a few inches. This is beneficial for doorways that are accessed from narrow hallways or stairs where a swinging door is impractical. Accordion doors also find use in bathroom entryways where the humidity is high from showers and baths. You can install an accordion door with a few tools and basic home improvement skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the wheel track for the accordion door with the measuring tape. Cut the track using a hacksaw, if necessary, to ensure it meets the width measurement at the top of the opening accurately.

    • 2

Stand the accordion door on end with the wheels at the top.

    • 3

Slide the track onto the wheels at the top of the door. Each wheel should be captive within the track. Ask a helper to hold the door securely as you install the track.

    • 4

Position the accordion door and track into the opening. Pull the door along the track to one side of the opening to access the screw holes in the top of the track. A step ladder can be used if the top of the opening is beyond your reach.

    • 5

Fasten the open end of the track to the header at the top of the door opening with a screw. Tighten the screw clockwise using the appropriate screwdriver. Move the accordion door to the secured side to install the remaining screws on the other end of the track.

    • 6

Install the accordion door jamb molding directly under the end of the track. The jamb will be at the end the door closes against.

    • 7

Check the jamb with a level to ensure it is straight up and down. Place the level vertically on either side of the jamb.

    • 8

Install and tighten the door jamb screws using a screwdriver. Tighten clockwise.

    • 9

Pull the door to the end of the opening opposite the jamb. Press it tightly against the door frame and check the edge of the accordion door with a level. Move it as needed to ensure it is straight up and down.

    • 10

Mark a line from top to bottom along the edge of the door onto the door frame using a marker.

    • 11

Extend the accordion door to the jamb. This action will open the door enough to access the screw holes in the last vertical panel of the door.

    • 12

Align the last panel of the door with the vertical line marked on the frame.

    • 13

Install and tighten the panel screws with a screwdriver using the vertical line as a reference.
