How to Make Sliding Doors for Crawl Spaces in Basements

Installing sliding doors to conceal the interiors of basement crawl spaces adds a more finished look to the room and insulates the room from cold or hot air that may enter the house through the closet. Bypass doors hang on rollers that slide along a metal track. Staggering the doors allows them to slide independently of each other along the track. It's unlikely a homeowner will find ready-made sliding doors for a crawl space, but the track systems the doors use operate the same way, no matter the height of the doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the track. Measure the width of the crawlspace opening and use a hacksaw to cut the door track to the right width. Hold the track up against the top of the opening and mark the screw holes on the jamb. Drill pilot holes and then screw the track into place, using the screws provided with the kit.

Make the doors. Measure the distance from the lip of the door track to the floor and subtract ½ inch. Add 1 inch to the width of the crawlspace opening. Cut a piece of plywood to these dimensions and then cut the piece of plywood in half to make two doors. Sand the cut edges of the plywood smooth and then paint or stain the doors. Attach door handles to each door so that when the doors are hung, the handles will be on opposite ends.

Hang the doors. Attach the rollers that came with the door track kit to the top of the doors. Set a roller in place about 2½ inches from each corner of the top of the plywood, mark the screw holes, drill pilot holes and screw the rollers in place. Hold the door up to the track at a slight angle and snap the rollers into place on the track. Repeat with the other door. Use the adjustment dial on the bracket to increase or decrease the height of the doors.

Install a door glide on each door. Door glides keep the doors from swinging inward or outward. Slide a door glide under the door, make pilot holes for the screws and screw it into place. Repeat with the other door.
