How to Repaint the Front Door

A fresh coat of paint on the front door changes the look of a house and removes the blemishes of the old paint job. It is cheaper and faster than replacing the door and does not even require you to remove the door from its hinges. When done properly, repainting improves the curb appeal and value of a house.

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the lock and handle.

    • 2

Strip the old peeling paint from the door using a scraper. Sand the area with an electric sander or sandpaper. Fill in any cracks or dents with vinyl spackling compound. Wash the surface with soap or ammonium hydroxide.

    • 3

Apply a coat of primer and then two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry before moving on to the next. Use a brush or a roller to do this. Use the same kind of paint and primer, for example oil-based or latex, throughout.

    • 4

Reattach the lock and handle once the paint has dried.
