How to Hang Trackless Bi-fold Doors on Laminate Floor

Trackless bi-fold doors are installed using a regular door hanging method, regardless of the floor surface. There are two types: folding and concertina. Folding bi-fold doors open like a double-folded greetings card, while concertina doors fold open like an accordion. Bi-fold doors do not require adaptation for laminate floors, as they should not touch the surface, but fixing rollers can help protect flooring if the joints sag.

Instructions

  1. Measure Up

    • 1

Use a tape measure to measure the width and height of the door frame. Purchase two hinged bi-fold doors, each should be half the width of the door frame minus .25cm and .5cm shorter than the height of the frame.

    • 2

If you plan to add rollers, buy doors that equal the height of the door frame, minus the height of the roller wheel and .5cm.

    • 3

Use a pencil, tape measure and spirit level to measure and mark two points on either side of the door frame,105mm below the top of the frame and 57mm in from the front.

    • 4

Measure and mark two points more on either side of the door frame, 105mm above the bottom of the frame and 57mm from the front.

    • 5

Hold a backplate against the left and right walls of the frame at each marked point, and mark the holes using a pencil. If the backplate is asymmetrical, position it so it faces in the direction that the door will open.

    • 6

Drill holes where the screws will fit. The holes should be as long and wide as the screw shank, minus the thread.

    Fix Backplates

    • 7
Fix the top backplate to the wall and the bottom backplate to the b-ifold door hinge.

Position the first backplate on the left wall, aligned with the upper drilled holes. If the backplate is asymmetrical, align it so it faces the direction in which the door will open, as per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 8

Fix the backplate to the wall with drywall screws, using a screwdriver or drill.

    • 9

Align the second backplate with the upper drilled holes on the right-hand wall, so it faces in the same direction as the first backplate. Fix it in place with screws, using a screwdriver or drill.

    • 10

Slot the remaining two backplates into the lower hinges on each door, as the manufacturer's instructions dictate.

    Fix Rollers -- Optional

    • 11

Using a pencil and tape measure, mark a point at the center of the underside of each inner bi-fold panel -- the panels farthest from the hinges.

    • 12

Drill holes at both the marked points, as deep as the screw is long, using a bit as wide as the screw shank.

    • 13

Align the screw holes on the wheel with the drilled holes so the wheels face downward when the door is upright.

    • 14

Fix the wheels in place using sheet metal screws and a screwdriver.

    Hang Left Door

    • 15

Hold the left bi-fold door against the door frame so the hinges are positioned to your left and face away from you.

    • 16

Mount the top hinge to the backplate on the wall, as per the manufacturer's instructions, so it opens in the desired direction. If the backplate is installed correctly, the hinge will lock to it so the door opens outward and toward you.

    • 17

With the top door hinge now secured to the wall, align the lower backplate with the drilled holes. Secure the backplate to the wall with screws.

    Hang Right Door

    • 18

Fold the left door open to access to the door frame. Hold the right door against the frame so the hinges are positioned on your right and face away from you.

    • 19

As with the left door, mount the top hinge to the backplate on the wall.

    • 20

Align the bottom hinge with the drilled holes and secure it in place with drywall screws.
