Which Deadbolts Will Not Rust?

Deadbolts

• Deadbolts lock and unlock by turning a locking mechanism that slides a metal bolt in and out of the door frame. It is more difficult to break through a deadbolt than a spring-bolt lock, which is the type of lock found on a door handle. For more security, use a double-cylinder deadbolt, in which a key is required to lock and unlock the door from both sides. However, for safety reasons, keep the key nearby or in the inside of the lock when at home so you, your family and guests can easily escape in an emergency.

Rusting

• Rusting is a chemical reaction that takes place when metal is exposed to oxygen found in water. It is technically a term used for iron when it oxidizes. However, rusting is commonly used to describe the corrosion that takes place on any type of metal after it gets wet.

Stainless Steel

• Stainless steel is a metal that does not rust easily. It is made with a minimum of 10.5 percent chromium, which provides a protective layer on the outside of the steel to prevent rusting This makes it the material of choice for sinks and drains. Stainless steel, therefore, would be an excellent choice for a deadbolt.

Other Types of Deadbolts

• Some deadbolts contain rust-resistant alloys for the latch bolts. Manufacturers of these locks combine metals that do not corrode easily. Since water can become trapped on the inside of the deadbolt, a rust-resistant latch protects the integrity of an unseen, but important, piece of the lock. Galvanized steel is also commonly used for deadbolts. It is coated with zinc oxide, which is rust-resistant. Since brass also resists rust, it is a suitable material for a deadbolt as well.
