Place the lock on the door where you want the finished piece. The lock itself must sit on the framing that surrounds the door. Lightly hit the frame, listening for a hollow sound. If you do not hear a hollow sound, adjust the placement of the lock, as a solid sound indicates glass under the frame, and you cannot drill through the glass.
Look for small holes on the lock, which is where you place screws that secure the lock. Push an awl through one of the holes and lightly strike the awl, applying enough pressure that it leaves a mark on the door. Mark each of the screw holes by punching the awl through each hole.
Hold an electric drill against one of your awl marks. Turn on the drill and carefully push the drill through the mark and into the door itself. Move the drill to your next awl mark and drill a second hole. Drill holes through each one of the marks.
Place the lock against the door and line up the screw holes with the holes you drilled in the door. Set one of the screws that comes in the kit on top of one of the holes on the lock. Wiggle the screw until it slides into the door. Tighten the screw with a screwdriver.
Set the other half of the door lock against the back of the door and tighten the screws into the door. If you install the door lock properly, it should lock and unlock with the included key, giving you quick access to your home.
