How to Hang Hollow Core Closet Doors

Hollow-core closet doors are designed for low cost and ease of use. They are made of a plywood or cardboard webbing covered on both sides by a thin veneer. One advantage of this construction for home renovators is that these doors don't weigh much, meaning that they're easy to move around when you're hanging them. A properly hung closet door will open easily and click shut when you close it without sticking in the frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance on the door from the bottom edge of the door to the lower edge of the bottom hinge.

    • 2

Add 1/2 inch to the measurement you took in Step 1. Mark this distance above the floor on the hinge side of the closet door frame.

    • 3

Place two 1/2-inch thick shims on the floor, positioned so you can set the door on top of them and have the door in its open position with its hinges in position on the door frame. Check the height against the mark you made.

    • 4

Screw the hinges to the door frame.

    • 5

Test the closet door by closing it. It should close and open without jamming or rattling.
