How to Hang a Hinged Door

Most modern doors open and close through the use of side hinges that mount to the door jamb. Typically, there are three hinges per door to equally distribute the weight when you open and close it. When hanging a hinged door, the proper placement and mounting of the hinges is critical to the proper operation of the door. Improperly installed hinges cause doors to sag or scrape against the frame instead of swinging freely.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the door into the frame and center it in the opening by inserting wooden shims under the bottom edge. Look at the side of the door jamb where the hinge marks are and draw marks on the door to indicate the location of the three hinges.

    • 2

Remove the shims and the door from the opening and place the door on work table.

    • 3

Place the three hinges on the side of the door aligning it over the pencil marks. Position them so that one side is flush with the edge of the door and center pins hang freely off the side. Insert the provided screws through each screw hole using a screwdriver.

    • 4

Run the blade of a utility knife around the perimeter of the hinge to score the outline in the door wood. Then remove each screw from the hinge and set the hinge aside.

    • 5

Chisel out the interior of the score line using the angled end of a wood chisel and tapping the chisel with a hammer. Continue until you remove approximately 1/4 inch of wood, or enough so the top of the hinge is flush with the top surface of the door when installed. Repeat the process to carve out areas for each of the other two hinges.

    • 6

Place the hinges back into position and reinsert the screws fully using the screwdriver.

    • 7

Insert the door back into the opening and open it slightly. Insert the wooden shims under the bottom edge until the hinges align with the hinge locations on the jamb.

    • 8

Insert more screws through the free side of the hinges so they extend into the door jamb. Remove the wooden shims from under the door and test it by closing and opening it.
