Installation Instructions for a Crestline Patio Door

Crestline designs replacement windows and patio doors to fit into existing window and door frames. The process of installing a Crestline replacement patio door depends upon the type of door – roller or hinged – you intend to install. The specifics of installation may also vary slightly depending upon the individual model of door, though each type follows a basic installation pattern. You can rent any power tools you need for installation but don't own.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Read your Crestline patio door installation manual. Contact the company to obtain this if not provided with one when you purchased your door.

    • 2

Remove your old door from its frame. Use your drill to remove a hinged door. Remove a rolling door by tipping it out of its framing device -- pull the top of the door out of the frame and tip it backwards until the bottom comes free.

    • 3

Take the old door away from the work area so it doesn't get in your way as you install the new door.

    Crestline Rolling Patio Door Installation

    • 4

Remove the frame of your old door. Rolling doors come with their own frames, which you must install before installing the door. Use your drill to remove any fasteners securing the old frame to your home's frame. Use your reciprocating saw to remove caulk or sealant holding the old frame in place. Put on your work gloves for this step.

    • 5

Remove the old frame from the work area.

    • 6

Place a layer of flexible weatherproof flashing along the bottom of the open area from which you removed the old frame.

    • 7

Fit your vinyl sill pan on top of the flexible weatherproof flashing. Seal it in place using your PVC cement, which should come with a small brush for application.

    • 8

Assemble your new frame, if necessary, following manufacturer's instructions. If the frame comes preassembled, skip this step.

    • 9

Place a layer of weatherproof caulk around the outside perimeter of the new frame. Put your tube of caulk in your caulking gun and spread the caulk using the gun to facilitate this step.

    • 10

Fit your new frame into place, pressing it tightly against the open area so the caulk dries to form a durable bond. If any gaps exist in the frame, fill them with small wood shims. Use your drill to place screws through your door frame and shim and into the frame of your home.

    • 11

Use your level to check for flatness on the top, bottom and sides of your frame. Use additional shims to adjust for flatness.

    • 12

Place the stationary half of your rolling door in the frame by tipping it in. Put the bottom portion of the door in the frame and tip the door upward until the top part fits into place.

    • 13

Tip the moving portion of the door in the frame. Secure the rollers in the bottom of the door to the rolling track in the door frame and tip the door up until the top portion fits into place.

    • 14

Adjust the rollers, if necessary, using your drill and the roller adjusting screw on the bottom of the door.

    • 15

Install weatherproof caulk in any gaps that appear between your home frame and the frame of your new door.

    Hinged Door Installation

    • 16

Use your measuring tape to determine the location of the hinges on your doors. Mark these areas with a pencil for easy drilling. Base the measurements on information in your Crestline manual.

    • 17

Use your measuring tape to determine the positions of the hinges on your existing door frame. Mark these locations with a pencil.

    • 18

Hold your doors up to each side of the frame to ensure that the marked areas for hinge installation on your doors line up with marked areas on the frame.

    • 19

Install hinges on your door frame in the marked locations using your drill and screws recommended by Crestline.

    • 20

Open the hinges and hold your new door up so the marked areas on the door line up with hinges. Attach the door to the hinges using your screwdriver. Repeat this process for the second door on a double door set, if necessary.
