Installation Instructions for Lambo Doors

Lambo doors are secured by a fixed hinge that allows them to open vertically rather than outwardly. The name derives from the fact that Lamborghini was the first production car to use them. They create a unique, stylish, post-modern look and sometimes are referred to as scissor, vertical, jack-knife or beetle-wing doors. Although Lambo doors are typically found on racing models and high-end sports cars, owners can install them on just about any vehicle with the right tools and a little do-it-yourself know-how.

Instructions

  1. Installing the Doors in 10 Steps

    • 1

Choose one side of the vehicle to start on. Use the appropriate size wrench to remove the front bumper, front fender and headlight housing to access the door hinges. Additional non-stock parts such as side skirts and lip spoilers also might have to be removed.

    • 2

Unbolt and remove the door stopper, then shut the door and securely fasten it to the rest of the vehicle frame using duct tape. Performing the installation while the doors are shut tight helps ensure the locking mechanism remains properly aligned and functional. Use the appropriate size wrench (usually somewhere between 10 mm and 15 mm) to remove the door hinges.

    • 3

Use a razor blade to cut the rubber boot that surrounds the electrical wiring running into the door. Be careful not to cut the wiring itself. Also, remove any protruding metal tabs using a metal-cutting saw. Each vehicle will vary.

    • 4

Use an angle grinder to cut and roll the inner fender. Measure carefully according to the instructions in the installation kit, as every vehicle is different. Use tin snips to cut slits along the fender’s lip about an inch apart to make it easier to roll.

    • 5

Bolt the new vertical hinge to the door and then to the frame, as specified in the installation guide for that particular vehicle.

    • 6

Remove the duct tape holding the door to the frame. Lift the door into the open position. Attach the shock absorber to the hinge with the appropriate size bolts, then lock it in place by inserting the accompanying metal clip into the absorber’s bottom.

    • 7

Adjust the height of the door as desired by tightening or loosening the adjustment bolt on the hinge. Then tighten all other bolts on the door.

    • 8

For extra security, use a blow torch and professional cement adhesive to weld the bolts to the hinge, door and frame of the vehicle.

    • 9

Slowly open and close the door to ensure it operates properly. Also, check the locking mechanism to make sure it latches and unlatches smoothly. The vehicle's open door warning system will alert you if the door is not securely closed. If the door's alignment requires a minor adjustment, tap the hinge with a hammer. If all works well, repeat the above steps on the other side of the vehicle.

    • 10

Reinstall the front bumper, fenders, headlight housing, skirts and any other parts that were removed in the process.
