How to Install a Self-Close Overlay Hinge for a Gatehouse

Because a gatehouse is a building that allows entry onto your property or garden, it can be especially convenient to install a series of overlay hinges onto the door so that it automatically shuts behind you due to the hinges' special design. If the door frame completely overlays the door of your gatehouse, you would need to install overlay door hinges anyway. Installation should take only a few minutes, as fitting overlay hinges is a similar process to other varieties of door hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the door against the frame and make clear pencil marks on the door where the new overlay hinges will be connected. Mark the door approximately one foot from the top and bottom of the end of the door opposite from the handle.

    • 2

Remove the door from the frame and drill a series of shallow holes into the door in the areas marked. Read the instructions included with the hinges so you will know how deeply you will have to drill and consider practicing on a piece of scrap wood if you are unsure.

Compare the spacing of the hinges on the door with the frame so you will know where to screw in the other half of the overlay hinges. Align the door to the gatehouse’s frame, attach the hinges by drilling screws through the hinge and into the wall.

Adjust the modification screws on the hinge to align the door’s position on the frame. A series of screws on each hinge slightly changes the position of the door. For example, adjusting the center screw moves the door up and down along the frame.
