How to Install Heavy Wood Garage Doors

Over time, a garage door can become damaged due to exposure to the weather or by being hit by a car. When this happens, you can replace the damaged garage door with a new one. Garage doors often are constructed of steel, but if you have an older home, wooden garage doors may be more suitable. Having an assistant can make this project easier, especially when handling the heavy door panels and spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the weatherstripping onto the bottom of the first door panel. Depending on the manufacturer, the weatherstripping can be attached with brackets, or nailed to the door panel.

    • 2

Screw brackets for the cable to the door panel, following the manufacturer's instruction. The cable assists you when opening the door. Screw the hinges to the top edge of the bottom panel. Usually, one hinge is placed in the center of the panel, and a hinge is placed on each end.

    • 3

Move the first panel into the door opening (on the inside of the garage) and center it.

    • 4

Assemble the tracks for the door, following the manufacturer's instructions for the model you purchased. The tracks provide a guide for the door when it's being opened and closed.

    • 5

Insert wheels into the outer hinges and brackets on both sides of the door panel.

    • 6

Position the door tracks by sliding them onto the wheels, leaving a small space between the tracks and the door panel so the door can move easily inside the tracks. Screw the tracks to the door frame, but don't fully tighten the screws in case you need to adjust the tracks later in the project.

    • 7

Screw the hinge and roller to one end of the top edge of the second door panel. Place the second panel in the doorway on the top of the first panel. Screw the hinge and roller to the other side of the door panel. Connect the two door panels by screwing the hinges on the top edge of the first panel to the bottom edge of the second door panel.

    • 8

Use a level to ensure the tracks are level and parallel to each other and are square with the door. Adjust them if needed. Tighten the screws to secure the tracks to the door frame.

    • 9

Install the third and fourth door panels, using the same method you used to install the second door panel. Insert the rollers for the top of the fourth door panel into the tracks, and screw them to the top edge of the door panel.

    • 10

Raise the door until it is fully open. Place vise grips onto the tracks to lock the door in place. Make sure the door is secure, because it can cause serious injury if it falls while you're completing the installation.

    • 11

Slide the end of the cable with the eyelet over the pulley. Pull the cable down to the bottom of the door. Connect the eyelet to the bottom bracket.

    • 12

Slide the opposite end of the cable over the pulley that is connected to the spring, and loop it through the bracket provided with the door.

    • 13

Connect an S-hook to the bracket, and attach the bracket to the track close to the opening in the wall.

    • 14

Insert the safety cable through the center of the door spring. Attach the safety cable to the bracket. The cable prevents the spring from flying off and causing injury if the spring breaks or the cable snaps.

    • 15

Remove the vise grips from the tracks, and test the door by opening and closing it.
