How to Hang a Pre-Hung Door

Pre-hung doors come with the door jamb already attached to the door with the hinges installed. The pre-hung door fits into the rough opening in the home. Although the jamb is in place, it must be shimmed correctly to make the door square or plumb within the rough opening. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the installation process. If you take your time making the door plumb, the rest of the installation will go smoothly.

Things You'll Need

  • Door shims
  • 4-foot level
  • 10-penny nails
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • 3-inch wood screw
  • Flush trim hand saw

Instructions

    • 1

Position the pre-hung door into the rough opening for the door. Check the fit of the door by centering it in the rough opening.

    • 2

Slide shims between the door jamb and the rough opening every 24 inches around the jamb.

    • 3

Analyze the reveal around the door jamb to see if it appears to be even. Adjust the shims until the reveal is nearly even along the side and top jamb. Place a level against the side door jamb and continue to refine the shim placement to make the door level.

    • 4

Hammer 10-penny nails through the door jamb into the rough opening at each position around the door that is shimmed so that the shims are nailed in place. Do not drive the nails entirely into place, leaving 1 inch sticking out. Check that the door is plumb with a level, adjust with additional shims if necessary and drive the nails completely into place.

    • 5

Unscrew the top screw of the top door hinge with a screwdriver. Drive a 3-inch wood screw in place of the removed screw with a screwdriver. The 3-inch screw will go into the frame boards of the rough opening and support the weight of the door.

Saw off any portions of the shims that project from the walls on either side of the jamb flush with the rough framing boards, using a flush trim hand saw.
