Installing Instructions for Larson Storm Doors

The Larson door is one of the most widely sold storm doors in the United States, according to Galt Technology. Since 1954, the company has been making wood-core storm doors with several innovative designs, such as stained glass panels, security bars, roll-back screens and full-panel glass panes. If you have obtained a Larson door without the instructions, the installation is simple. With a few hand tools, you can install your door and keep the drafts and weather out.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hinge rail that came with your Larson door on the doorway at the top of the door frame. Mark the hole for the placeholder screw with a pencil. Remove the hinge rail. Drill the pilot hole with the drill. Screw the placeholder screw in place, but leave it unscrewed about 1/4 inch, since you will need to take it back out to install the hinge rail in the next step.

    • 2

Set the door interior side up on your workhorses. Remove the screw from the top of the side of the door and use the hole as a pilot hole for your first screw. Attach the hinge rail with a screw through the pilot hole. Mark the rest of the holes on the hinge to the door. Remove the hinge rail and drill out the remaining pilot holes. Screw all the screws into the pilot holes and secure the hinge rail to the door.

    • 3

Slide the extender on the bottom of the hinge rail. Unscrew the placeholder screw and hold the door in place, pushing it tightly against the top of the door frame and screw the placeholder screw in place.

    • 4

Pre-drill a hole on the bottom inner side of the hinge rail and install a screw to secure the door opening. Continue to drill all the pilot holes and place screws on the inner side of hinge rail locations.

    • 5

Pre-drill all the holes along the inside edge of the hinge rail. Place the screws in position. Push the door tightly against door frame, drill the holes and install the screws on the outer side of hinge rail. Place the screws on the inner side of hinge rail.

    • 6

Cut the extender weather stripping to length with scissors. Peel off the paper backing and install it in place. Slide the rail extender down to the sill, loosening the hinge rail screw if necessary.

    • 7

Set the drip guard in place over the door on the outside. Mark the holes, pre-drill and screw it into position, making sure that it is centered over the door and not in the way of the door opening.

    • 8

Set the latch rail in place after sliding the extender on the bottom, holding it snug against the top inside of the frame. Check to make sure the door swings open without hitting it. Pre-drill all the holes and then screw it in place, sliding the rail extender down to the sill before tightening the screws. Apply the weather stripping to the rail extender space.

Attach your hardware to the door. Slide the sweep into the bottom of the door expander and crimp the ends with a needle-nosed plier. Hold the door expander in place on the bottom of your door and adjust it to fit the threshold. Screw it in place from the inside.
