Components of Exterior Double Doors

Exterior double doors are common and sometimes practical. They are manufactured in just about every standard size and can be custom made to fit your application as well. Exterior double doors are made from many different components and materials, depending on the use of the doors. Whether or not the building is a commercial or residential dwelling and how long a fire rating is required are just two of the factors that determine the choice of materials for the doors.
  1. Frame

    • The middle post between these doors is called an astragal.

One of the components of a double door system is the frame. A frame is installed in the doorway, and the doors are attached and hung in the frame. The frame has a few more components than a frame for a single hung door. The biggest difference is the use of an astragal, which is the piece of frame between the two doors. It acts a stop and a weather seal and is where the doors latch.

    Door

    • Metal double doors are sturdy.

The door blanks are another component of a double door system. Favorite choices for door blanks for residential use are insulated fiberglass, insulated steel and solid wood. Commercial applications usually use a glass door with a metal frame. Style choices with a residential door can include glass windows in the door, raised panels or both.

    Hardware

    • This door uses push plates in lieu of handles.

Another component of any door system is hardware, which includes handles, locks and latches. Handles could be as simple as push/pull plates or stylish handles that come in thousands of styles and finishes. Locks can be a simple latch or a deadbolt. Deadbolts come in many styles as well. You can usually get them as part of a handle set, so the finish matches. You can also purchase keyless remote control or security keypad access deadbolts.
