Can a Pocket Door Be Installed in the Basement?

A pocket door is a door that slides back inside the wall. It does not swing open to the inside or outside but slides into the pocket frame made for it in the wall itself.
  1. Space Saver

    • Almost any basement can have a pocket door as long as it has the proper frame work inside the wall. It can be installed into an existing wall and doorway or within a newly framed one with the proper planning.

Installing in an Existing Door Frame

    • In an existing door frame, make sure the length of the wall can accommodate the size of the door you have chosen. Measure first before buying a pocket door. If necessary, you can have a custom size made to fit.

Installing in a New Door Frame

    • It is easier to install the framing for a pocket door built into the wall as the wall is actually being built. Again, measure what size you need and frame the wall accordingly. Make sure the door works properly before finishing the wall with sheet rock.
