How to Remodel Wood Cabinet Doors

If your wooden cabinet doors look like they have seen better days or the stain has faded, remodel them. Remodeling wooden cabinet doors does not require special carpentry skills or tools. Instead, consider bringing the wood back to life on your cabinet doors and installing new hardware. New hardware (hinges and a knob) immediately renews the look and feel of your cabinet doors. When deciding on cabinet knobs, consider other appliances in the room, for example, a stainless-steel refrigerator. Selecting stainless-steel doorknobs will complement the other appliances.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cabinet doors by unscrewing the hinges holding them in place. Hinges attach to both sides -- front side and inside -- of cabinet doors. Place the doors on a flat working surface.

    • 2

Remove the cabinet doorknobs with your screwdriver. Unscrew the screw holding the doorknobs in place on the backside of the cabinet door.

    • 3

Sand the cabinet doors with sandpaper. This allows stain to adhere to the cabinet door and dulls the current stain on the doors. Repeat for each cabinet door. Clean all dust off doors with a soft brush after sanding.

    • 4

Measure all sides of the cabinet door (top, bottom and sides) with your tape measure. Purchase wood trim according to the measurements for each cabinet door.

    • 5

Secure wood trim to each cabinet door with your hammer and finishing nails. Lay the cabinet door on a flat surface and place the trim on the door. Secure the trim with finishing nails.

    • 6

Stain each cabinet door and attached trim with the stain and a rag. Shake the stain, open it and dip your rag into the stain. Rub the rag onto the cabinet door and trim. It does not matter if you apply the stain with the grain or against. Repeat as necessary. Allow the stain to dry and apply a second coat if needed.

    • 7

Attach new doorknobs to each cabinet door. Place the doorknobs against the front of the cabinet door and secure by screwing the screw into the back of the doorknob with your screwdriver.

    • 8

Attach each cabinet door to the cabinet frame with new hinges. Place the door against the frame where you removed it, and screw screws into the designated holes already on the door and frame. Repeat for each cabinet door.
