How to Install Johnson Bifold Doors

Perform a preliminary check of the door opening. Check that the header is level, that the frame corners are square and both jamb sides are straight and plumb, using a tape measure, level and framing square.

Mount the top track. Position the track against the jamb header, 3/4 inch from the front edge and 1/8 inch from each side, then secure to the jamb with the screws provided and a screwdriver.

Lay the door panels face down across sawhorses or on a flat surface and align the top and bottom edges. Define the door panels visually as the pivot door, or panel that will pivot to open, and the guide door, or panel that closes against the opposite jamb.

Install the panel hinges, called "breathing hinges" because of their shock-absorbing design, between the door panels. Position the top hinge first, with the top edge 7 inches from the top of the door, the hinge tabs between the door panels and the long leg of the hinge's pivot block on the pivot door side. Secure the hinge to the door panels with the four screws provided.

Measure from the top or bottom of the door panels and mark the middle point, then position the middle panel hinge with the bottom edge on this mark. Match the top hinge orientation, with the hinge tabs between the door panels and the long leg of the hinge's pivot block on the pivot door side. Secure the hinge to the door panels with the four screws provided.

Install the bottom panel hinge with the bottom of the hinge 11 inches from the bottom of the doors. Again, match the other two hinge's orientation, with the hinge tabs between the door panels and the long leg of the hinge's pivot block on the pivot door side. Secure the hinge to the door panels with the four screws provided.

Attach the pivot plate to the top of the door, 5/8 inch from the jamb side of the door panel. Secure the pivot plate with the two screws provided. This will position the top pivot pin 2 inches from the door's edge. The pivot plate is stamped with direction arrows for proper orientation.

Install the top guide pin plate to the top of the guide door, 5/8 inch from the jamb side of the door panel, and secure in place using the two screws provided. This will position the top guide pin 1 1/2 inch from the door edge. The guide pin plate is stamped with direction arrows for proper orientation.

Mount the bottom pivot plate to the pivot door panel, 5/8 inch from the jamb side of the door panel. Secure the pivot plate with the two screws provided. This will position the top pivot pin 2 inches from the door's edge and aligned with the top pivot pin. The pivot plate is stamped with direction arrows for proper orientation.

Measure the door panel height dimension, then measure down vertically from the jamb header and mark this dimension on the pivot side of the jamb. Next, measure horizontally 1 3/16 inches from the jamb face and mark the intersection with the vertical measurement.

Install the adjustable jamb bracket to the door jamb by aligning the elongated top screw hole on the jamb bracket with the point determined in Step 10 and securing the bracket with the screw provided.

Stand the door panels upright in the door opening and check that the track's pivot bracket lock is in the "open" position. If closed, open the pivot bracket lock by sliding the lever horizontally toward the opposite jamb side.

Lift the door panels upward to insert the guide pin into the top track and the top pivot pin between the jamb and the track pivot bracket. Pull the door pivot pin firmly into the track pivot bracket and slide the pivot lock closed. The door panels will now hang securely from the top track and can be released.

Swing the bottom pivot pin over the jamb bracket and raise the bracket to engage the pivot pin. The pivot bracket should be positioned approximately at the midpoint of the pivot pin to prevent interference with the door movement. Secure the pivot bracket in place against the jamb, using the two remaining screws provided. If a horizontal door adjustment is needed, use the special wrench provided to adjust the position of the pivot arm, then tighten to set the adjustment.

Mount the door knob by drilling a 3/16-inch hole in the guide door panel, 36 inches from the bottom of the doors and 1 1/2 inches from the hinge edge. Insert the doorknob screw through the rear side of the door and thread the knob onto the outer end of the screw until tight.

Repeat steps 3 through 15 for the remaining doors in a four-door installation.

Adjust the top guide resistor, referred to as a "snubber," by fully closing the doors and moving the snubbers in the top track against the top door guide. Open the door and move the snubber approximately 1/8 inch toward the door guide side, then tighten the center screw to secure in place. For four-door installations, there will be two scrubbers to set. The doors should now stay firmly closed and snap gently when pulled open.
