How to Install a GADCO Extension Spring

GADCO, which stands for General American Door Co., is a garage door company. Its doors require hardware, track and springs specifically made for models. Extension springs come with the doors and installing them follows the same basic principles of installing springs on any other type of garage door. With a few tools and the proper instruction, these can be installed in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the two sheaves with the two extension springs using the provided nuts and bolts. Connect a sheave about four inches from the wall on both sides in the third hole using a bolt and washer.

    • 2

Attach the eye bolts on each side of the rear hanger with a 5/16-inch nut on each side. The eye bolts should be about 12 inches above the track. This will keep the assembly from dragging on the track.

    • 3

Open the garage door halfway and prop it open. Check that the horizontal tracks are parallel with each side of the door. The rollers also should not come out of the top brackets more than half an inch. Open the door completely and place C-clamps on both sides of the track below the bottom rollers to keep the door from closing.

    • 4

Connect the loop of the provided cable over the button on the bottom bracket and thread it around the stationary sheave. Hook the ends of the springs over the eyebolts at the rear track hangers.

    • 5

Tie the cable to the adjust clip and hook it to the horizontal angle with an S-hook. Adjust the knot so all tension is gone and the cable is holding the springs above the horizontal track. The springs should be stretched the same on both sides of the door.

    • 6

Tie either end of the cable to the rear track hangers and thread it through the center of the extension spring. Continue through the bushing in the sheave fork and tie the rest horizontally. Repeat this step for the other extension spring.
