How do I Install a Rixson Offset Floor Closer?

Rixson offset floor closers are installed in a recess in the floor, allowing the closer to be concealed and leaving only the pivot pin exposed. The closer body is enclosed in a container which protects it from contact with cement used in the process of securing the closer in the recess. Unlike external closers, Rixson offset floor closers do not use arms and fasteners attached to the frame and door, rather a direct pivot pin is the only exposed moving part. Rixson floor closers are designed to be set in cement in order to be properly secured.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the closer cover container.

    • 2

Mark the closer dimensions on the floor, adding 1/2 inch to the length, width and depth of the closer container marks. This additional space allows room for the cement around the closer container.

    • 3

Cut out the perimeter marks on the concrete with the wet saw. Operation of the wet saw involves making shallow cuts around the perimeter and progressively lowering the blade to achieve the desired depth.

    • 4

Remove the concrete inside the cutout with the chipping hammer to the appropriate depth.

    • 5

Place washers in the bottom of the recess to support the closer. Washers are used as shims to raise the closer flush with the finished floor.

    • 6

Place the closer in the recess and level the surface of it by placing the level horizontally across the length and width of the closer.

    • 7

Install two wood shims at each end of the length of the closer to secure it in the recess.

    • 8

Mix and pour the cement into the recess in the space around the closer container.

    • 9

Fill the recess with the cement to the surface of the existing concrete floor and smooth it off with a wood shim.

    • 10

Remove the wood shims and fill in the holes created by them with additional cement.
