The unit format determines the number of sliding door panels. Dual track doors have one movable panel that slides past a fixed panel. Multi-track doors have two or more movable panels and a single fixed panel. Pocketing doors have one or more panels that all slide into a wall and have no fixed panels.
Many retailers build sliding door frames to order in 1/4 inch increments. Widths for sliding doors range from just under 5 feet to nearly 16 feet. Heights range from approximately 6 feet to just under 8 feet. As a general rule, dual and multi-track sliding doors have a 3/4 inch to 1 inch overlap where panels meet in the middle.
When used for patios, most sliding doors have some form of multi-point locking system. Common lock types include hook locks that latch at the door handle, magnetic handle locks and bolt track locks that fix the moving panel in place along the door's bottom track. Multi-point locking systems use a variety of these types.
