How to Install a Prehung Wood Door

A prehung door already is attached its casing (the wood border immediately around the door) with hinges, so it can open and close even before it's installed. Sometimes the knobs and latch are pre-installed as well. With a prehung door, all you have to do it is secure it in the doorway and get it straight, without worrying about properly hanging it. However, it is a good idea to set one long screw through each hinge so the weight of the door is on the house frame and not just the casing.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the prehung unit in the doorway, with the door closed. The hinges should on the side of the door that will open inward.

    • 2

Hold your level vertically along one side of the casing of the new unit. Slide shims between the outer edge of the casing and the doorway, until the level reads plumb.

    • 3

Open the door so you can access the inner span of the casing. Shoot in 2 1/2-inch screws in through the sides, every foot or so along the front and back edges.

    • 4

Cut off the overhanging portions of the shims, using a razor knife.

    • 5

Remove the middle screw from each hinge where it's attached to the casing. In its place, drive a 2 1/2-inch screw, so it goes through the casing and into the house frame.

    • 6

Insert the door hardware into the pre-drilled holes at the face and front edge of the door, following the instructions on the hardware.
