How to Remove a Glass French Door

Also known as double doors, French doors are found in both interior and exterior settings, but, no matter what their location, the process for removing the doors is the same. In most cases, have at least one other person present to help you remove glass French doors. These doors are typically heavy, and the glass inside the doors is fragile.

Instructions

    • 1

Place foam mats or other soft, protective coverings on either side of the set of French doors. Place a dropcloth over the coverings, and tape the coverings or dropcloth to the floor to secure them, if needed.

    • 2

Cover each side of the glass completely with paper pads or foam packing sheets. Double over the foam to provide a good cushion. Tape the paper pads or sheets to the door with blue painter's tape so that you don't ruin the door's finish. Place a long sheet of packing paper over the paper pads or foam, if needed. Tape the paper into place.

    • 3

Use a stepladder to reach the top hinge of one of the French doors. Unscrew the bolt on the bottom of the hinge pin, if needed. Place a thin screwdriver or thin chisel where the top of the pin meets the top of the door hinge. Tap the screwdriver or chisel gently with a hammer to loosen the pin and create a gap between the pin head and the hinge. Pull or twist the pin out of the hinge.

    • 4

Have another person hold the door securely in place so it won't fall. Remove the pins from the rest of the hinges.

    • 5

Swing the door open carefully. Lift the door and step back to lift it off its hinges. Set the door flat on the ground or safely against a nearby wall. Do not set the door anywhere where it might fall and shatter the glass.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3 through 5 on the second door.
