How to Hang an Anderson Hinged Patio Door

Hinged patio doors, sometimes referred to as French doors, swing rather than slide. These doors provide the enhanced visibility of a full glass door in a standard swinging door. Anderson Windows manufactures hinged doors in single, double and triple panel. The manufacturer provides complete installation instructions with the product.

Instructions

    • 1

Build the rough opening to fit the planned hinged patio door. The rough opening includes a wood header across the door opening and wall studs placed to create the appropriate opening. If the planned materials for the interior floor are thicker than 1 11/16 above the subfloor add a shim or slim piece of wood under the sill of the hinged patio door. Make sure the sill or bottom of the opening is level.

    • 2

Remove the protective shipping covers from the door. Use a large screwdriver or small pry bar to remove the covers. Protect the finished areas of the door with thin pieces of wood or heavy cardboard while prying the cover loose. Apply three 3/8 inch beads of caulk all the way around the rough opening of the door.

    • 3

Set the door on the sill on the outside of the house. Raise the top of the door so the door fits into the rough opening. Apply caulking at the corners as the door is fit into place.

    • 4

Check the vertical of the door for plumb. Check the plumb on both the left/right orientation and the in/out orientation. Use a 4-foot carpenter's level to gauge plumb. Make adjustments to the side-to-side plumb by placing shims, which are thin pieces of wood, between the door opening and the door frame. Adjust the in-and-out orientation by sliding the door within the opening as necessary.

    • 5

Fasten the hinged patio door in place using 3 inch screws. These screws are provided with the unit and match the hinge colors. Place the screws through the door frame at the designated locations where they will be covered by the trim. Do not completely tighten the screws at this time.

    • 6

Remove the spacer clips between the frame and the door. Pry the spacers off with a small pry bar. Place a thin piece of wood or heavy cardboard between the pry bar and door to protect the finish.

    • 7

Add the door hardware. Remove the factory-installed screws from the hinge locations and then install the hinges using the included 3-inch screws. Fasten the latch or door knob and lock assembly using the included 1-inch screws.

    • 8

Check the door operations to make sure the doors swing easily without obstructions. Tighten down the partially tightened screws through the door frame into the wall studs and header. Place the trim covers over the screws.
