Proper Lockset Installation

A new lockset can improve the look or security of your home. Although installing a lockset is not difficult, you should keep a few keys points in mind before getting to work, such as the size of the lockset replacement needed and whether you will want a keyed set.
  1. Lockset Replacement

    • When replacing a lockset, purchasing a lockset of the same size will make installation easier. Most locksets use either a 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backset, which is the measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the lockset hole. The finish of the door under the old faceplate may vary from the rest of the door. Use a lockset with the same or larger size faceplate to cover this difference.

    New Installations

    • Standard lockset installation is 36 inches above the floor. Measure this area of a decorative door to determine the size of faceplate that it will accept; this is not an issue on flat doors. Templates that lay against the door come with new locksets to determine where to drill to install the lockset.

    Keyed Sets

    • When replacing multiple locksets, you may consider buying keyed sets for convenience. These sets include two or more locksets that use identical keys. Buying sets that use the same key is much less expensive than having a locksmith modify existing locksets to accept the same key.
