How to Sand Pre-Hung Interior Doors

Despite its name, a pre-hung door doesn't hang itself. The advantage of a pre-hung door over a stand-alone door is that the door jamb is prefabricated to fit the door and the depressions in the door and in the jamb where the hinges will go are already in place. You'll still have to install the jamb and trim around it, and you'll have to finish the door and the jamb by staining and sealing or by painting. A pre-hung door may be made from solid wood or it may have a hollow core.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the hinges and lay the door flat on a workbench or two sawhorses.

    • 2

Sand the exposed surface of the door with a foam sanding block or with sandpaper folded into a square. Do not use a power sander. Use a medium/fine-grit sanding block or sandpaper. Most pre-hung doors come relatively smooth and all you need to do is a little finish sanding.

    • 3

Use a back and forth sanding motion with the grain of the wood.

    • 4

Sand one side, then turn the door over and sand the other side in the same manner.
