Install the door jamb if you haven't already. Position the jamb into the rough cut door opening. Place two shims flush against each other periodically between the jamb and the opening. You typically want approximately three to four sets of shims on each side of the door. Nail the jamb through the shims to the door stud using a hammer and 10d nails. Use a level to make sure the jamb is plumb.
Lay a level flat against the floor of the doorway, once you've finished installing your jamb. If the floor is not level, measure the difference in the level between one part of the floor and another. Cut off the amount of difference at the bottom of one leg of the jamb.
Place the door flat on a table or other flat surface. Install the hinges on the door. Place each hinge on the door where you want to place it. Drill pilot holes through the holes in the hinge into the door. Do not go all the way through the door. Screw the hinges to the door.
Hold the door up in the door jamb. Leave approximately 3/8-inch above the door. Place the door against the jamb. Use a level to make sure the door is straight. Mark the position of the hinges on the jamb.
Remove the pin and take the hinge apart. Place the unattached part of the hinge against the door jamb. Drill pilot holes through the holes in the hinge into the door jamb. Screw the hinge to the jamb. Repeat the process on the other hinges.
Hold the door up in the doorway. Position the hinges so the hinge on the door slides into the hinge on the jamb. Put each pin back in its proper hinge. Open and close the door gently to make sure the install is working and complete.
