Get your dog to stand erect by the door. Place a ruler flat between the top of its shoulder and the door, and then mark this height on the door. Draw a horizontal line across the door at this level.
Measure 2 inches above the line and draw another horizontal line. Measure 3 inches below the first line and draw another horizontal line.
Measure the center line of the door from the left and right edges of the door. Draw a vertical line where the center line meets the three horizontal lines you drew earlier.
Hold the tracing sheet with the "Stop" sign on it against the door. Place it so that its top edge meets the highest horizontal line you drew and its bottom edge meets the lowest horizontal line. Adjust it so that its center aligns with the vertical center line of the door. Use sticky tape to paste the tracing sheet onto the door.
Place the end of a screwdriver at an angle against the top section of the door hinge and hammer the handle of the screwdriver upward to remove the hinge. Repeat with the other door hinges and remove the door from the frame.
Lay the door on a level working surface and trace the outline of the tracing sheet onto the door. Remove the tracing sheet.
Use a 1/2-inch drill bit to drill holes into the four corners of the rectangular shape you drew. This helps with the cutting stage.
Use an electric saw to cut out the rectangle, running the saw from one corner hole to another. Discard the part of the door you cut out.
Place one frame on each side of the hole. Use a screwdriver to insert six screws into the frames to keep them in place. Use 1-1/4-inch screws if your door is 1-3/4 inches in thickness or less. If your door is thicker, use 1-3/4-inch screws.
Slide the cover from the top of the inside part of the frame when you want to close the pet door.
