How do I Install an Electromechanical Lock on a Commercial Glass Door?

Electromechanical locks are used on a variety of commercial steel, wood or glass doors in a variety of settings. They can be mounted to the door on one side or through the door, depending upon the door type and personal preference. These locks are used where security is of utmost concern. They are usually mounted as single directional, exit only doors, which adds to their security rating. Installing them requires some pre-measuring and marking to fit them correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Electromechanical lock assembly
  • Diagrams
  • Hack saw
  • Mounting hardware
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Check the contents of the installation package. Confirm that you have the door bar, mounting hardware packet, PUSH TO EXIT plate and the TSB-C cable and hardware packet. Verify also that the hardware packet contains four blind nuts, the blind nut installation tool, four external tooth washers, two end mount retainers, two E-clips and four Phillips pan head screws. Refer to the contents labeled parts sheet if you do not recognize these names and hardware.

These locking bars can also be installed in the door headers at the very top of the door frame.

Prepare the door for the electromechanical bar install by first holding the bar up to the door to make sure the bar fits between the stops of the door frame. If the bar is too long, you must cut it to fit.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the stops and the door frame. Subtract two inches from the total distance measured. For example, if the distance between stops is 30 ½ inches, cut the bar to 28 ½ inches.

    • 4
The end caps must be removed to adjust the bar length.

Remove each end cap with the Phillips screwdriver and lay aside. Measure the required distance you need the bar to be. Use a hack saw and be careful to make a straight cut. Remove the excess material from the end opposite the cable, on the front half of the bar. Repeat the procedure for the back half of the bar. Clean the cuts and blow the shavings out of the bar frame.

Hold the bar against the door to locate the holes to be drilled and mark them. Drill the holes through the door following the diagram and instructions. Install the blind nuts. Place the blind nut into the tool as shown. Use the ½-inch box wrench to hold the blind nut.

The blind nut is very different from the usual nut.

Apply firm pressure to the glass door while using the 3/16 hex to tighten the cap screw collapsing the blind nut. With the blind nut collapsed, remove the blind nut tool by reversing the cap screw from the blind nut. Repeat for the other blind nuts.

Route the TSB-C cable/wire through the end cap and use the mounting hardware to mount the prepared bar onto the holes you drilled earlier. Connect the electrical circuits referring to the diagrams. Replace the end caps and test the door lock install by opening it several times.
