Where Can I Find Specifications for Prehung Interior Doors?

Remodeling or building a new home can be an exciting and overwhelming adventure. Deciding on what type of interior doors to hang, and making sure they meet space specifications, can be two of the many decisions to be made. An average two-story house can have as many as 18 or more interior doors, impacting the feel and sound of the inside of the home.
  1. Facts

    • Pre-hung interior doors come in both standard and custom sizes. To ensure you have the correct size door for your home check the specifications given by the manufacturer. Each manufacturer has its own specifications for the doors it produces. A door's specifications can typically be found on the labels or signage at your local home improvement store. The door's manufacturers website will also list specifications.

    Tips

    • When installing pre-hung doors the rough door opening must be sized correctly. If the door opening is too large or too small, the door will not be able to be installed correctly. Look at the width and height of the frame of the pre-hung door. Confirm the products specifications for rough opening requirements.

    Considerations

    • Doors can be custom ordered, if standard pre-hung doors cannot be found to fit a pre-existing rough opening. If you are looking for a handicapped accessible door most manufacturers recommend a 36-inch door. This allows for slightly more than the minimum clearance of 32 inches in the doorway, which is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
