The IBC requires manufacturers to permanently mark windowpanes by designating qualities such as the thickness of glass or glazing material. Windows should undergo pressure testing for 10 seconds at a rate 1.5 times greater than the pressure design. The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Windows and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) establish door and window standards used by the IBC.
The American Society of Testing and Materials offers standardized testing methods for the structural performance of exterior doors and windows. Such tests measure a door's water resistance, while the AAMA/WDMA/CSA offer testing standards for structural integrity, air leakage and forced entry. For rating purposes, windows and doors fall into one of five classes.
Other requirements for the construction of doors and windows include acoustics and sound control, energy performance, heat build up (in case of fire) and operational force. Also, flashing and installation of windows and doors must follow the manufacturers' instructions.
