Entry Door Hardware Instructions

The right hardware on your home's entry door will secure and protect your home. While most interior doors have door knobs with or without simple locks, the hardware on an entry door should include a door knob with a substantial lock plus an additional dead bolt lock installed above the knob. Installing an exterior doorknob set and a dead bolt lock is a simple task that most homeowners can accomplish with only a screwdriver.

Instructions

  1. Doorknob Installation

    • 1

Remove the existing door handle. Open the door to locate the screws holding the hardware in place. They may be hidden by a metal flange that can be popped off with a screwdriver. Unscrew the door handle with a screwdriver and remove from the door. Next, unscrew the screws in the two strike plates and remove the strike plates. One strike plate is on the edge of the door at the same height as the door knob, and the other is on the door jamb at the same height.

    • 2

Install the door handle latch assembly and latch plate. Slide the door handle latch assembly into the hole in the entry door. Slip the latch plate over the end of the latch assembly. Screw the latch plate into place with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Slip the door handle into the installed latch assembly. Slide both sides of the door knob into place, one facing the exterior side and the other facing the interior. Secure the door knob with screws and a screwdriver.

    • 4

Place the new strike plates on the door and door jamb. Screw them in place with screws and a screwdriver.

    • 5

Test the door knob to make sure it latches in place in the strike plate.

    Deadbolt Installation

    • 6

Remove the old deadbolt lock. Examine the door jamb to locate the strike plate for the deadbolt lock. Unscrew the strike plate for the deadbolt. Find the screws holding the existing deadbolt lock in place. Remove them, then pull the lock from the door.

    • 7

Set the new dead bolt lock into place in the hole in the entry door. The keyed cylinder should be located on the outside of the door and the turn lever on the inside.

    • 8

Screw the dead bolt into place with a screwdriver. The screws will be located on the turn lever side of the dead bolt lock.

    • 9

Screw the strike plate for the dead bolt lock to the door jamb.

    • 10

Test the dead bolt lock. Close the door and turn the lever on the dead bolt lock several times to make sure that it works.
