How to Fix a Squeaky Garage Door

If your garage door sounds like a freight train every time you open or close it, it's probably time for some lubricant. Fixing a squeaky garage door requires the application of a silicone lubricant spray on the spring, hinges, wheels and wheel tracks. The automatic garage door opener pulls a chain to lift the door and over time this chain can dry out. Special garage door opener lubricant found at your local home improvement should be applied to the chain, at least, twice a year.

Put on eye protection. Spray the main spring above the garage door with the silicone lubricant. Spray the hinges which connect the different pieces of the garage door together. Spray the wheels and the roller tracks of the door with the lubricant. Wipe away all excess lubricant with a rag. A ladder may be needed to reach these areas.

Open and close the garage door several times to allow the lubricant to work its way into the areas you've sprayed. Push the open and close button to accomplish this.

    • 9

Open and close the garage door several times to allow the lubricant to cover the entire screw drive shaft.

    • 10

Inspect the roller tracks for debris and wipe them clear with a clean cloth.

    • 11

Spray the roller tracks and the garage door hinges with silicone lubricant. Open and close the door several times until the squeaking stops. When the parts that are rubbing together are fully lubricated the squeaky should stop.
