Commercial Lockset Instructions

Commercial grade lock sets, used in stores, office buildings and other commercial locations, provide quality security of the entrance ways of your buildings. Commercial lock sets can be installed in both wood and steel doors. Commercial grade lock sets require the installation of specialized trim in addition to the lock and barrel set. The lock set trim adds additional security to the doors. The specialized trim will be determined by the features of the commercial lock set you select.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide whether the door handle will be on the right or left side of the door. The handle must be opposite from the hinges.

    • 2

Mark a small horizontal line on the door 40 inches off the floor.

    • 3

Place the lock set template that comes with the lock set so that the center horizontal line on the template lines up with the horizontal line marked on the door.

    • 4

Mark the holes using a nail from the template onto the door. The holes on the template will differ in each lock set. This makes the assembly of each lock set unique.

    • 5

Mark the area on the door's edge for the mortise cavity and edge plate.

    • 6

Drill the holes marked on the door. Drill halfway through one side and continue through on the opposite side of the door to avoid splitting in the door.

    • 7

Mark the center of the strike plate location on the doorway jamb with the strike plates horizontal guide being 40 inches off the floor.

    • 8

Drill out the mortise cavity in the door's edge and on the jamb.

    • 9

Insert the lock barrel into the mortise cavity until the edge plate lines up with the horizontal mark on the door's edge.

    • 10

Screw the edge plate into the door with two screws.

    • 11

Attach the specialized trim plate over the edge plate with two screws. There are a variety of trim plates that can be purchased as a part of your commercial grade locks. These will need to be aligned with the horizontal line on the trim plate with the horizontal line marked on the door.

    • 12

Attach another specialized trim plate to the door jamb with two screws. This specialized trim plate will align with the horizontal line on the trim plate with the horizontal line on the door jamb.

    • 13

Attach the knob or lever to each side of the lock set by screwing the latching screws through the rose plate of one handle until they screw tightly into the rose plate on the other side of the door. The screws will pass through the door and the lock set.
