Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of your door. You will need these measurements when buying your new door. You can buy new doors at most home and building supply stores.

    • 2

Remove the old door by removing the pins out of the door hinges. If you cannot remove them by hand, press a screwdriver to the pin and tap lightly with a hammer. Be careful the door does not fall on you when removing the top pin. Set the old door on a flat surface.

    • 3

Remove the doorknob and hinges from your old door. Lay your old door on top of your new door, and trace the old door with a pencil. If the new door is slightly larger than the old door, you may need to cut the new door to the proper size.

    • 4

Use a utility knife to score your pencil marks. Then cut across your marks with the circular saw. Lay the old door back on top of the new door when you're done cutting.

    • 5

Use your combination square to line up where the hinges were on the old door to where the hinges on the new door will be. Draw a line where each hinge will be.

    • 6

Score your lines using your chisel. This will be where the hinge leaf will sit. Sit the new door up with the hinge markings faced upward. Make several cuts at an angle with your chisel inside the scored area. Cut these wood chips out cleanly, so that you have an indent for the hinge leaf.

    • 7

Spread wood sealant over the edges of your door to prevent moisture/water damage. Attach the hinge leaves to your new door.

    • 8

Line up the door with the door frame. Insert the top pin, and then the bottom pin to attach the door to the frame. Test to make sure the door swings smoothly. Remove the door.

    • 9

Use a drill to drill out an eye-level peephole if you'd like. Line up the doorknob to the existing lock on your door frame, and drill out a hole large enough for the old doorknob or a newly bought doorknob with a hole saw. Screw on the doorknob.

    • 10

Hang up your door by lining up the hinge knuckles with the hinge knuckles in your door frame, and inserting the hinge pins.
