How to Replace the Patio Door Roller Assembly

A sliding patio door helps give easy access to patios, decks, porches or gardens. The patio door consists of two glass panels. One is fixed in position, and one slides on a track. The sliding panel has rollers mounted at the base of the door that roll along a track mounted in the door jamb. Over time, the weight of the door may cause the rollers to wear, necessitating their replacement.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the roller adjustment screws at the base of the sliding panel of the patio door. Slide the door partially open to reveal the screws, if necessary. Turn the screws in a clockwise direction with a Phillips screwdriver, which retracts the rollers into the door, making the door easier to remove from the track.

    • 2

Grasp the sliding door on each side. Lift the door straight up in its frame until the rollers clear the track at the bottom. Pivot the bottom of the door away from the door frame, then lower it until the top of the door clears the door frame at the top. Remove the door from the frame and lay it across two sawhorses.

Back out the retaining screws that secure the bottom of the door frame and the rollers in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the bottom of the door frame to reveal the door rollers. Dislodge the bottom of the door frame with a rubber mallet and a block of wood if it is stubborn. Remove the rollers from the door frame.

Place the new rollers into the bottom of the door, lining up the mounting holes. Replace the bottom door frame cover and tighten the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Grasp the door on each side and carry it to the door frame. Tilt the top of the door inwards and lift it into the door frame until it stops. Swing the bottom of the door inwards, then lower the door until the rollers are resting on the track.

Test the operation of the door by sliding it back and forth. Adjust the height of the door by turning the roller adjustment screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the screws clockwise to lower the door or counterclockwise to raise the door.
