Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the opening to determine how big the door will need to be. Round up to the nearest inch to get the proper size door. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and record the smallest measurement. Run a tape measure along each side of the opening and directly in the middle to get the measurements for the height. Take the smallest measurement once again to ensure the door is not too big for the opening.

    • 2

Inspect the jamb and area around the door to make sure it is clean and free of dirt and debris. Wipe away any dirt with a rag and sweep up the debris with a broom. Clean off the bottom of the sill. Sweep it with a broom to remove any debris that is located on the bottom.

    • 3

Set the door into the frame from the outside of the house. Run a level vertically to make sure everything is square and plumb. Place the level halfway up the door on either side of the jamb to verify the door is straight in the opening. Set the level horizontally across the top of the door to ensure it is straight in this direction also.

    • 4

Add a screw into each one of the hinge holes and check to make sure it is still level. Add shims to fill any gaps up the sides if necessary. Open and close the door to make sure it is working properly.

    • 5

Insert the screws into both sides of the jamb to attach the door to the frame. Drill in a screw every eight inches along each side to firmly secure the door in place. Cut off any excess shims with a utility knife. Set a level on the jamb again to make sure it is square and plumb.
